Business Case Document

Business case is a formal written documented argument intended to convince the decision maker to approve some kind of action. It is carefully constructed document used to examine the benefits and risks involved with the action and also describes all relevant information (such as costs, benefits, impact and calculations of financial case.) needed to make some decision in performing action. While writing a clear and concise business case for any project must be included following seven critical sections.

Executive Summary describes the overall business case of document and summarizes whole document in a way the readers can rapidly get an idea about information in a document.

Problem Solving is a concise description that articulates the problem that the project supposed to solve. It identifies the particular areas of issues need to be addressed.

Analysis of the Situation is a more detailed description of the situation behind the problem and how the situation has occurred. It also provides details about the future consequences if the present situation continues.

Solution Options describes the potential solutions of the problem in sufficient details. Usually, it includes multiple possible solutions for the problem.

Project Description describes the whole project aspects such as all the requirements needed, project budget and goals of the project. This section also includes any risks involved in the project with brief explanation to deal with the problems. In a budget section includes budget predictions like Return on Investment (ROI) and Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). Finally, it describes all the stages and measurable criteria to determine the project success.

Cost-Benefit Analysis includes projected financial analysis of the company.  This section describes costs and benefits including proposed solutions to the problems and alternatives, illustrates the case studies. Charts and graphs also included to depict the financial benefits like investments and returns.

Recommendations describes the circumstances under the project should be undertaken and how it is to be conducted as well. It also includes implementation of compelling results of the cost-benefit analysis and final statement of belief that the project should go ahead.
